Reykjavik on maailman pohjoisin pääkaupunki. Täällä talvet ovat kuitenkin leudompia kuin Suomessa ja kesäisin islantilaiset etsivät shortsit ja hihattomat paidat +15 asteen "helteen" yllättäessä. Noista celsiusmääristä ei paljon ylemmäs enää mennä. Samaan aikaan suomalaisen alkukesä kuluu itkiessä kuinka kesä ei tullut tänäkään vuonna kun lämpötilamittari näyttää onnettomat +15 astetta.
Reykjavik is the world`s northernmost city. Still winters are here milder than in Finland. When the temperature goes up to + 15 degrees in the summer, Icelanders put on their shorts and t-shirts because summer has finally arrived. Temperature rare goes over +15 ( or even reach that point..) Meanwhile in Finland, people are constantly complaining how summer didn`t arrive this year either, when the thermometer shows only +15.
Vuosien ajan olen vannonut, että olen syntynyt väärään maahan. Suomen hyytävät talvet ja vaatemieltymykseni eivät ole koskaan oikein kohdanneet. Rakastan minishortseja ja hellemekkoja yli kaiken, mutta -20 asteen paukkupakkasessa ei ole voinut muuta kuin alistua lämpökerrastojen pariin. Teini-iässä uhmasin Suomen talvea pukeutumalla minihameeseen säällä kuin säällä. (Onneksi minulla oli sentään paksut sukkahousut päällä..) Nyt myöhäisiän uhmaiän laannuttua, olen siirtynyt takaisin paksujen vaatekerrastojen pariin, vaikka välillä pahaa tekee.
I have been thinking for many years, that I was born in the wrong country. Finland`s cold winters and my taste of clothes haven`t found the balance. I love mini-shorts and summer dresses the most in the world, but when it`s -20, I just have to say goodbye to my love ones for a while. In my teen`s, I wanted to 'fight' against the weather and was wearing mini-skirts (and fortunately warmer tights) in the winter time. Now later on, I have except my reality and changed back to layering even though my inner summer-self yells for relief.
Olen myös kova palelemaan. Palelen herkästi talvisaikaan niin sisällä kuin ulkonakin. ( Ei ihme, että islantilaiset antoivat minulle pääasiassa joululahjaksi sukkahousuja, kaulaliinan ja villapaidan.) Siksi hieman tragikoomiselta kuulostaakin, että otin ja lähdin Islantiin, missä sää on Suomeakin karumpi. Vaikka täällä lämpötila ei yleensä mene alle -10 asteen, niin kylmä ja raaka mereltä puhaltava tuuli tekee ilman tuntuvaan hyytävältä. Jos Helsingin keskustan tuuli tuntuu pahalta talvella, niin mieti tuulta kolme kertaa pahempana ja pääset aika lähelle Reykjavikin sääolosuhteiden totuutta.
I am good at freezing as well. I freeze always in the winter time, inside and outside. ( No wonders why Icelanders gave me tights, a scarf and a wollen sweater as Christmas presents.) It can sound a bit funny that the most freezing person in the world, moved in to Iceland where the weather is rougher than in Finland. Even though the temperature doesn`t go under -10 degrees, the wind is the evil friend who doesn`t leave you alone. If you think the wind is cold in the downtown of Helsinki, the wind of Iceland is at least 3 times worse.
Olen Helsingissä talviolosuhteiden ekspertti. Pyrin liikkumaan keskustassa ollessa niin paljon kuin pystyn maan alla, koska se on eri käytävien ja metrojen takia mahdollista. Pitää varmaan ostaa oma lapio ja kuokka tänne Reykjavikiin, että voisin toimia samaa täällä. Täällä ei liiemmin tunneleita ole.
I am expert of cold avoidance in the winter time in Finland. Most of the time I walk or travel underground in the downtown of Helsinki. It is actually possible since we have so many walking tunnels and metro. I probably have to find a shovel and a mattock to be able to do same here in Reykjavik. Here tunnels are still just a dream in my mind.
Jos tuntuu siltä, että sää muuttuu nopeasti Suomessa, Islannissa se muuttuu vielä nopeammin. Yhdessä hetkessä aurinko saattaa paistaa kirkkaana taivaalla ja seuraavassa hetkessä myrsky riepoa maankamaraa. Muistan edelleenkin elävästi, kun lähdin eräänä iltana "virkistävälle" juoksulenkille ja ollessani keskellä lähes tyhjää "erämaata", katastrofaalinen raekuuro alkaa. Rakeet ovat ainakin pikkurillin päänkokoisia ja ne lyövät kasvoihin kuin terävät veitset. Kuuro loppuu noin 10 minuutin päästä yhtä äkillisesti kuin on alkanutkin, mutta kasvoja särkee vielä tovin kuuron loputtuakin.
If you feel that the weather changes fast in Finland, it changes even faster in Iceland. At one moment innocent sun might shine in the sky but at the next moment the evil storm arrives and the sun is just the memory.
I still remember the evening, I went for a 'refreshing' evening run. I was in the middle of nowhere when enormous hailstorm started. Hails were the same size as your nails on your little fingers and they hit on your face like sharp knives. Fortunately the hailstorm ended after 10 minutes, as quick as it has started, but my face was still hurting a while after the incident.
Talvella myrskyt saattavat olla välillä niin rankkoja, että koulut joudutaan sulkemaan ja ulkonaliikkumiskielto asettuu voimaan. Näin kävi viime joulukuussa 2015 hurrikaanituulien iskiessä maahan, ja repiessä kattoja ja parvekkeita pois sijoiltaan Etelä-Islannissa. Hurrikaanituulet iskivät myös Reykjavikiin, onneksi eivät kuitenkaan yhtä vahvana kuin etelässä, mutta sen verran vahvana, että ulkonaliikkumiskielto oli voimassa. Koko Reykjavikin pääkaupunkiseutu sulki tuolloin ovensa iltapäivästä. Minäkin pääsin tuolloin lähtemään töistä 2 tunnin olon jälkeen ja kykin kotona koko loppupäivän kuunnellessani koko yön yli jatkuvaa tuulen armotonta ujellusta.
In the winter time the storms can be so rough that schools are closed and people have been advised not to go out of the house. This happened last December 2015 when the hurricane winds arrived to Iceland. The storm caused a lot of damage in the Southern Iceland where it ripped off roofs and balconies. The storm wasn`t as damaging here in Reykjavik but people were not allowed to leave houses. All Reykjavik capital area was closed on that day starting from late afternoon. I was just 2 hours at work and spent the rest of my day sitting alone inside my home listening the wind moaning violently outside.
Kevättä kohti kuitenkin kovasti mennään ja toivottavasti pahimmat sääkatastrofit ovat jo tämän talven historiaa. Vaikka lunta on vielä runsaasti maassa, niin kummallisen aurinkoisia ja lämpimiä päiviä on alkanut ilmetä.
Fortunately spring is more near the day after day and we can just hope the most extreme weather catastrophes are just history. It`s still snow everywhere but it has been surprisingly sunny and warm days in the past weeks.
